I am a registered nurse who has struggled with weight control for 30 years since having had 4 children. I have tried every diet over the years. The only thing that ever worked were the Phen-Fen pills. It was the only time I wasn't obsessing about food. Then the pills were pulled by the FDA.
Finally, I reached a point where my health was being impacted. I need knee replacements for both my knees and my blood pressure was borderline. I knew I had to do something. I looked into Lap-Band surgery. I didn't qualify for surgery in the U.S. and my insurance company would not pay for the procedure. Two nurses I knew had Lap-Band surgery. One in Portland, Oregon and the other in Mexico. At first I thought the nurse who went to Tijuana, Mexico was crazy. I got on the internet and started to invesitgate it. I compared the services provided by the physician and hospital in the U.S. and the sevices provided by Dr. Ortiz. I was impressed. I decided to have the surgery in Mexico.
I have worked for 25 years in a busy Emergency Department and have been the Director for 8 years. I am a very observant and critical person. Every step of the way I received one-on-one excellent caring service. The center had state of the art equipment. Superior to some of the equipment at my hospital. Every physician spent time reviewing my health history and discussing the procedure. I have always gotten short of breath with exertion. None of the U.S. physician every investigated it. The Cardiologist exaimed and discovered my Tidal Volume was below normal. The physician treated me with breathing treatments before and after my surgery.
I was impressed with the cleanliness of the surgery center. There was a physican there 24 hr/day and registered nurses took care of me. I had my Lap-Band surgery on July 12th. I was concerned about being hungry on the liquid diet. It wasn't a problem. I have not been hungry. I have been at multiple family dinners and stayed on my liquied diet without any problems. Next week I can start eating solids. I thought I would be really excited. But I am very content on my protein drinks. I have lost 17 lbs and my knees feel better.
The only minor problem I had was with the soreness of the port site. The first week and a half it was uncomfortable at times. However, that has passed. I am so impressed by Dr. Ortiz and his staff. I wish I could get this quality of care and compassion in the United States.
